Are the Worms Turning?

… all 60,000,000 of them?

Over the next few days, every member of the British Parliament will be receiving a copy of George Orwell’s book, 1984*, with a note reminding the recipient that this book is NOT an instruction manual.

At midday on 5th November, a blogger, going under the name of Old Holborn will be taking a gentle stroll from Trafalgar Square to Parliament Square and then back to Trafalgar Square. He says that 30 minutes of exercise is good for him, so the doctor tells him.

He invites anyone to join him in his stroll.

He states, “Remember, this is not a protest, this is not a march, this is not a gathering – all of which are now illegal and you can be sure Mr Creedy** WILL extract your DNA if you give him the chance. It is a merely a relaxing stroll in Autumn sunshine. No placards, no protest, no chanting.”

He hopes to give the Government a 5th of November that shall never, ever be forgot.

Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot…

I hope the weather stays fine for Old Holborn and his friends.

* Nineteen Eighty-Four, by George Orwell (the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair), is a 1949 English novel about life under a futuristic totalitarian regime in the year 1984. It tells the story of Winston Smith, a functionary at the Ministry of Truth, whose work consists of editing historical accounts to fit the government’s policies. The book has major significance for its vision of an all-knowing government which uses pervasive and constant surveillance of the populace, insidious and blatant propaganda, and brutal control over its citizens. The book had a substantial impact both in literature and on the perception of public surveillance, inspiring such terms as ‘Big Brother’ and ‘Orwellian’.
