So, how would you spend £131 million?

Hire 4,216 newly-qualified police officers for a year?

Construct a new medium-security prison for 1,300 inmates?

Hire 6,477 registered nurses for the NHS for one year?

Or would you spend it on refurbishing government offices?

That’s what has happened! The Ministry of Justice (under Jack Straw) has just refurbished their offices at Queen Anne’s Gate, formerly the Home Office offices.

The re-fit includes £2,745,000 on new furniture and fittings for the offices and £290,000 on artwork.

The former open air car park in a central courtyard was given a high-level glass roof to form an atrium with meeting spaces and a canteen. The headquarters also boast an outdoor picnic area with contemporary hardwood furniture.

Lavish refurbishment seems more important to ministers than reducing crime.
